Default Family moving to Baton Rouge

Hello, we're considering moving in Baton Rouge area, but do not know which neighborhood is better suited for us. We want to buy a house, in a good area, definitely a good school, and something that would be at the most 150.000 dollars. It's a challenge, but we want to make it right. So if someone could give us a better idea on which areas are good, that would be highly appreciated Thank you in advance.

Most good sized homes for $150,000 (in good areas, as well) will likely require some updating. There are several for sale in that range in Old Jefferson Subdivision.

I also saw something pretty good for sale in the Cedarcrest area. But even though Cedarcrest-Southmoor is one of the better elementary schools run by EBR public schools, it still carries the stigma of being an EBR public school.

I suggest looking at Zachary. The best school system in the state and easily the most painless commute from the suburbs into the city. It's a very family oriented area. It does not have as much retail as say, Ascension or Livingston, but it is also much more of a "community".

thanks alot for the quick reply. I was considering private schools, but if i'd move to Zachary, public schools would be just fine? And can you please name a couple, because i have no idea of schools in that area.

Private gives you alot more options. You can use greatschools.net to learn more about different schools in our area.

A few of the popular private options include: St. Joseph's Academy, Catholic of Baton Rouge, Episcopal School, The Dunham School, Redemptorist, Christian Life Academy, Parkview Baptist, St. Michael's, St. Jude Elementary, St. George Elementary, Our Lady of Mercy Elementary, St. Aloyisius Elementary, etc, etc, etc.

AnnieRose1, we are assessing the place for ourselves too and I found that ZACHARY is rated best in the state for public schools but I still have no idea what the state rankings are in the country. It doesn't seem promising. I've experienced private schooling also and even though it is private, you should still check into their curriculum and their faculty reviews & school rating. My child may go to a Catholic School somewhere in the Zachary area - IF WE MOVE THERE - but I would not be opposed to other Christian schools or non-denominational private schools that have really good ratings in the country - not just the state cuz Louisiana as a whole does not rank well as a highly educated state. Here is a link to all the schools in the BTR area but maybe not Zachary. This is also a good link for other info on the BTR lifestyle: schools in Baton Rouge, LA Local Search Results

I already told you in the other forum that Zachary schools ranked better than those in Fairfax, Virginia on the greatschools scale. I am sorry if I sound rude, but if you move to the Zachary District and you send your children to private school, you are throwing your money away. Plain and simple.

I live in Denham Springs. Schools are very good here. However, traffic is not. There are decent homes in your price range in the Denham Springs, Walker & Watson areas.

I didn't care for Denham when I moved here because of the traffic, but have heard good things about it. My nephew graduated from the high school this year and seem to have liked it, his mother also graduated from there. Check Shenandoah, they have reasonably priced older homes, but at that price point they will probably need updating (walls, floors, etc). There is also two or three new subdivisions but the houses are over the budget you mentioned. I've heard good things about Woodlawn High School and Parkview Baptist (which are in the area), but others on this forum are more knowledgable on if they really are good.
