Thank you everyone. Its nice to know there are very helpful people out there! I will be pulling up the map and checking out everything you brought up-its not too much info, trust me. I can use all the help I can get! This may sound like a silly question, but we are huge Walmart supercenter shoppers, is there any particular one to steer clear of? I realize Walmart has all types frequenting it , though. lol. There was just one we went into while traveling and it was horrible, I felt like we walked into another planet - it was soooo slummy. Again thanks for the advice and thoughtfulness - it is all very much appreciated. Also if you guys have any advice of fun family things to do or go to, please share, I have a very active 5 year old.

We really don't have any Super Centers that are slummy, just some are better than others. For instance, I find that the Super Center at Siegen Marketplace has a dreadfully small selection compared to the Super Center on College Drive.

Thank you, MetroBTR, for your post. I have adult kids w/family moving the BTR soon and this will help them a lot. They are looking at Denham Springs as a first choice based on word of mouth, but this will give them more to consider.

Yes, as always a wealth of information on this forum! Jaxnbulldog, I will address Denham Springs for you. I live here and have most of my life. I enjoy it and plan to stay. The schools are good but, the traffic is horrible right now. I am fortunate that I do not have to travel to and on I-12 every day. Ascension schools are also good. Hope this helps.

The possiblilites are endless here for activities! There is a Baton Rouge Parents Magazine that comes out monthly and it has loads of information about things to do here in Baton Rouge. There are 2 Chuck E Cheeses, Monkey Bizz, Jump N Jive, Bouncing Tigers, It's My Party there is Free First Saturday or Sundays at the Shaw Center where they have art activities for children and then the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum has a Discovery Depot and Play Area just for little ones. There is also the Highland Road Observatory which is pretty neat. The Mall of Louisiana has a nice little play area for kids. WE also have nice movie theatres here. Starting in October I think it is, downtonw there is Sunday in the Park where they have bands and some food and people stroll around and enjoy the music and food-I think from 12-3pm or something. There is also Live After Five downtown starting in the fall that attracts many people and they have food and bands downtown on certain Fridays in the fall. Another good magazine to get here is 225 Magazine. That magazine has lots of things listed as well. There is Clarence Baton Rouge on line and he has lots of information on his website too. There are many other things to do here, but to many to list. We have great playgrounds here too!

There are many good places to stay both inside and outside the city. Have you been for a house hunting trip yet? I bet you will be surprised when you actually see some of the neighborhoods, there are many nice ones in area 5 (close to your husbands work) and area 4.

I never heard of Coursey being bad, I live between Coursey and Tiger Bend Road and love it. House are nice, spacious and yards are well kept. Neighborhood association is active with activities for the kiddies on every holiday and unmarked security patrols. The backyards in this area are HUGE! Especially compared to what you get in the suburbs of places like Dallas. I mean big enough to put a guest house on if you wanted to. In fact many have mother in law suites in the backyard. You just don't see back yards like that inside most cities anymore; especially for around 200K.

Yes there was some gas station / bodega type store robbed a couple of months ago but let's face it, those 24 hour 7-11 type stores get robbed eventually in every area, and yes I mean EVERY area, which is why they spend time training new employees on way to avoid being robbed. I'm not even sure what part of coursey it was on.

The thing about Baton Rouge is there are hidden neighborhoods that are quite pretty and nice. For instance Lake Sherwood Acres, just gorgeous but you would never know it was there. So work with a good rental agent and you should be fine.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Thank you Betabeta. My husband plans on going down for 2 weeks when his job starts and looking after work. I think just looking online is dissapointing because there arent many home rentals that are decent/and/or affordable. I have noticed for a decent newer 3 bedroom rental it starts at least @ 1400 a month. we are looking for around 1100 which we may not have any luck with that. I think once he drives around and looks, he will find plenty.

Does anyone know of any rental agents in the area?

I would love to have a backyard like you mentioned, and hope to find a neighborhood where kids trick or treat and has a sense of cummunity.

Thank you Caa for the info on fun things to do-it sounds like we wont have a problem finding entertainment.

Also what is fall and winter like here?

Fall is very comfortable. Winter is Chilly but it only gets below freezing a few times during the season.

Try CJ Brown, you can google for their contact info. I believe their rental division is Latter & Blum, but I might be wrong on that. But call them and let them know you are interested in their rentals. Also check 2theadvocate.com, the local newspaper website. The weather is very mild, not many ice storms like you see in TX. We have had one snow day in the almost three years since I've been here. I also most wish it would get a few days of ice to kill off the garden insects more.
