Alright, here we go. These are a few of my favorite neighborhoods in that general area.

Kenilworth is a large established neighborhood between Highland Road and Perkins Road.

Pollard Estates is a little ways up Perkins Road. It is a very good neighborhood and its future seems secure because of its location right next door to the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, which is expected to continue growing.

Wimbledon is a smaller neighborhood off of Perkins Road that is between Bluebonnet and Siegen. Before they began expanding Perkins Road I probably would not have recommended this neighborhood. But with the expansion should come ease of access. The Dunham School is located in the back of this neighborhood and it is a very good private school

Keep in mind that these are just a few neighborhoods. There are too many smaller neighborhoods in the area to go into detail about.

Default don't foget the newer neighborhoods

Depending on your price range, you'll find a bunch of nice locations. I particularly don't like the old ranch homes so I tend to favor the more recent "french" movement. At the mid level for newer homes I would say look at Jefferson Terrace (the Sixth filling and the other sister neighborhoods in there; Woodland Shadows, Bluebonnet Terrace, etc.). The Highland rd area is the best IMHO but it gets pricey; Also check out the new Alvarez project (James Town) you get a lot of house for the money there (it is probably the most succesful new projects right now). The other locations MetroBR mentioned are nice as well.

I travel along highland and perkins pretty much everyday the traffic is OK, except for those peak hours. When we moved here (from Florida) everyone told us to go look at the suburbs (e.g., Dehnam Springs, Prairiville, etc.) because you get better public schools (although East Baton Rouge has a couple of really good ones; but hard to get in) and more house for the money; but the commute seemed impossible (15min is about as long a commute as we wanted).

Good luck and welcome to town...

WE moved here from Florida as well, but way down south Florida. I heard the same thing, but we love our neighborhood and neighbors here in Baton Rouge. Same thing with the schools, but a friend of a friend moved her family to Ascension parish and even though the schools were better, the kids behavior was not impressive-remember, in public schools these days, teachers have no authority hardly anymore and the kids are still the same-just an opinion. Also, the family moved back here and went back into private. best to you-you will love it here especially compared to Florida!
