Property Taxes (Baton Rouge: sales, house, purchase)

This may be too broad of a question, however we're ranking places to live and having a difficult time discerning what the property taxes are in Baton Rouge. I'm sure it depends on what part of town one lives in, so for my purposes, the area around Highland and Perkins Road.
Also sales tax is 9% and State Income tax is 6% correct?

The area of town has no bearing on your taxes , except for maybe a surcharge for a fire protection district ( possibly ) . That idiot Mayor is pushing a new bond issue that will raise propertry taxes and sales tax . It will probably pass .

I think I've figured out that property taxes in Baton Rouge/LA are close to 10%. Can anyone verify or repudiate?

For income taxes:

For single taxpayers, they are:
-- 2 percent on the first $12,500 of taxable income
-- 4 percent on taxable income between $12,501 and $25,000
-- 6 percent on taxable income of $25,001 and above.

For married persons filing joint returns, the rates remain the same but the income brackets are doubled.

Look at that website. you can search by the address and/or subdivision you want to purchase a house. Louisiana has rather "low" property taxes comparing many other states. (I've only lived in CA, MN, WI, NJ, CT, and MA.)

10% would suggest a tax of $30,000 on a house valued at $375,000, so, no, 10% is not correct. I think you meant to say 10 mils which still isn't accurate but a lot closer. You'll be paying about $3000 on a house valued at $375,000.

Don't forget to factor in the Homestead Exemption . You are exempt from paying taxes on the first $75,000 of your home's value . A $300,000 home is taxed at $225,000 . You must file for this in person at the assesor's office initially .

its ~1% of property value minus the 75k for homestead exception.

i live in the shenandoah area. my house is valued at 180,000. the homestead exemption removes 75,000 of taxed value and i usually pay around 750 per year. the bond issue probably will fail, but even if it does pass, it is forecasted to add $15-25 per year. big deal...

9.9 mils AND another .5% sales tax is a big deal . Especially for 30 years . I'm glad it crashed and burned . And Kip has nobody to blame but himself .
