I'm living in Alabama now, probably going to move to Louisiana this summer. Haven't decided between NO and BR, but that's beside the point of my question, which is, how far out of BR do you have to drive to see the stars really well?

If you're looking for a zillion stars on a clear night, you'll have to go north a ways... probably just south of Junction City AR.

There are plenty stars to look at.If You want there is an observatory downtown and there is also one at one of our BREC Park Facilities .I live Just north of LSU campus and on clear nights there are plenty of things to look at with a simple scope.

With climate being what it's like here, you'll need a scope.

There are a few observatories, like fbbertusa said. The one downtown, one one Highland road, and I think there is one on LSU's campus, but I'm not sure if it is available to the public. There is also a group called BRAS (Baton Rouge Astronomical Society) that operates mostly out of the Highland Road Observatory. They hold star parties and things. You can go to their website and see what they are all about.

Also, there should be somewhere in any direction from Baton Rouge that you can set up a telescope - ascention parish, central, zachary, livingston parish port allen, etc. All of these have rural areas. My dad has a scope and he goes out to Blackwater Road in Central (behind our church) to use it.
