I had a Motorhome, three cars, a boat and a motorcycle besides the household.

I towed the boat and the gun-safe out with the jeep. Returned by train to rest up. Made the second trip with what ever household I couldn't get rid of inside the motorhome and towed the MC. Another train trip and towed one of the cars behind another.

Fuel was half what it is now. Never again.

We had two cars and two motorcycles. I bought a trailer (anybody want to buy it?) and towed the bikes out behind one of the cars. Every time we stopped for gas it was $80 - 100, plus meals and hotels. My daughter came along and helped with the driving so we had extra everything, including her airfare back to St. Louis. When we got here we found that the City of Redmond had turned off the water so there was a $125 fee to turn it on "after hours" (3pm on a Friday). We had packed ourselves but even with liquor boxes we spent hundreds on bubble wrap, large boxes and packing tape. It felt like we were bleeding money from closing until a week after we moved in. Don't underestimate moving expenses - they will be much higher than you budget for.

So watch for my post in a couple months on the frugal move cross country and how we did it. LOL

Okay, honestly from what I have read and researched I will probably add to the chorus of wow was that expensive.

One thing we are doing is a major purging of stuff and furnishings.

I still have a Jaguar in West "By God" Virginia because it coasts more to move it than it is worth. And I sold another car just before leaving.

People get too attached to their "Stuff". And when it comes to furniture, the "Stuff" that went well in the old digs, just doesn't seem right in the new den.

I'll figure out how to do it as frugally as possible too and report back as well (although next spring), but we've still got minimal stuff (only the two of us, a baby and two cars) and hopefully purge some more too. Plus we'll just coming from Seattle, so not near the distance.

This thread and pricing move have us committed moving as little as possible. Perhaps just 2 bedrooms, two flat screen TV's, books, art, rugs, one of my wife's favorite sofas... the offset in moving costs and money from selling the rest of our furnishings seem like the best choice reading the moving stories. Very informative thread.

If you are moving from a larger area keep in mind that Bend has a smaller number of furniture and electronics stores so replacement costs might be higher than found in areas that have more competition.

Items I consider moving are ...... Washer and Dryer if high end and newer. Otherwise sell and replace when I get there. Range and Refrigerator depends on the decor of where I am moving. Bed if high end, other wise replace. Art always. Clothing yes unless it is excessive. Kids toys, yes the good stuff or favorites. The big plastic crap, no. Bicycles yes. Dressers or chests, yes if high end other wise replace well used with well used when I get there. Pictures, always. Kids ....... well let me think about.

My son moved back to Bend from Southern California, and he went in and got a quote for a rental truck, plus a tow dolly for his Blazer. The fee was so high that he then purchased an enclosed cargo trailer instead of renting the truck. The trailer cost $300 more than the rental on the do-it-yourself truck.

He could have sold the trailer for what he paid for it, but he kept it and we use that thing at least once a month, so good value for the money.

He did already own a vehicle that could tow a trailer, or that wouldn't have worked as well.
