Snownut - I didn't realize your move was approaching so quickly. It's seems like you've been in waiting mode for a while; hopefully everything comes together nicely for you over the next couple of months! You have been, what seems like, very diligent in the process and I look forward to hearing how your view changes once you actually get to make the move!
I will certainly provide updates.

Tomorrow is the point of no turning back for me as the contingent on the home we are buying in Bend runs out. That Bend purchase is contingent on the sale of our VA home which has not happened yet. So after tomorrow if this home doesn't sell then we loose, what for us, is a large deposit on a home. Thankfully we have a few more months, the builder did not want to carry that risk so only gave us a short contingent window. The home is still ours as long as we sell and have the funds before the projected closing in September. I will be sure to make that happen!

Good luck, Snownut. We went through the same thing when our CO home didn't sell in time. We, however, got our deposit back and (finally) sold our home. The home we lost out on sold for $5,000 less than our offer and we bought a home here for $17K less than the first. We had to drop the price on the CO home quite a bit to move it, so it all worked out in the end. Moving expenses were much higher than we estimated, however. All in all, it was a very stressful experience I hope not to repeat anytime soon.

I have budgeted around 8K to move us across the country, hope that is enough. We are getting rid of huge amounts of clutter and stuff and looking forward to a streamlined home and life in Bend. Ridiculous how much stuff we have collected!

Having a big garage sale this Saturday if anyone wants to come? There will be good deals and many nice things to be had.. We are only 2,600 miles away.

Our move from Colorado to Bend cost us about $6K, which was much more than we should have spent. If I had to do it all over again, I would have sold all my furniture, except maybe a few pieces. I remember our realtor in CO giving us this advice, saying he's moved across the country a few times. We thought it was crazy to buy all new furniture. We didn't have a house lined up, other than a rental though, so we had no idea what we would end up with. Our house in CO was newer, built in 1992, with bigger rooms overall. The home we bought here was built in 1972, with very small rooms. Our furniture was purchased for the big rooms and now we are wall to wall furniture.

I second this advice. I moved here on about 3-5k (I was young without much stuff) and used a moving company. It was a huge pain in the neck and a big worry. If I could do it over again I would sell most of my furniture except for a few pieces and start anew with the new floor plan. At this point, I have mostly new furniture now anyway since my 'young persons' furniture was mostly garbage. So if you have really nice pieces this option could be more difficult to pull off.

Also, there's just something about moving to a brand new location and starting from scratch that I think can be beneficial to the brain.

We used ABF, where they drop off the trailer and you load and lock it. They charge by the foot of floor space, not weight, so you need to pack well. We rented the trailer for a month and packed and loaded a lot of it ourselves, then hired muscle to help with furniture (we had a long, steep gravel driveway that we had to shuttle everything down). We left all the appliances. When it got close to time to move, we still had too much stuff left and no time to sell or even donate it. We got a second trailer delivered and filled a third of it. By the time we added gas, meals and hotels on the way from Denver, and labor on this end to help unload, we were almost at $15K. So yes, get rid of as much stuff as you can part with long before you move.

Wow, large moving numbers, I'm hoping we can do it in under 2k if/when we do, but we're only coming from Seattle, hope to sell a bunch of stuff and I think I'll just rent a Uhaul truck and tow one of the cars. The idea of moving with a small amount of furniture and stuff is enticing and exciting (for the new stuff).

You may still be in for a surprise. The U-Haul towing may add another $500 in fuel.

Also the .79 per mile that Uhaul charges. When you factor everything in, doing a long distance move with Uhaul is about as cheap with someone like Mayflower. Short distance Uhaul is worth it.

I paid about $3K to move from Texas. The peace of mind of letting someone else do it was worth the money. Moving has to be one of the most stressful things you can possibly do.
