I've seen lots of burnt out forests in my travels, but I've admittedly never looked closely at them, so perhaps I'm barking up the wrong "tree".

Pretty sure it's beetle kill, as Oregonwoodsmoke stated. What you are probably seeing is a shadow along the tree. Doesn't look like a fire scar to me.
