Absolutely but Bend lacks anything close to ethnic diversity.
Have to agree. Hawaii is so much more diverse. I am hopeful with the new OSU campus Bend will improve in this area.

Thank you to all of you-definitely provided great insight. The weather change will be drastic but we lived in Seattle for a few years and while we enjoy the cold we are looking for more snow rather than rain. It sounds like you guys are having a very unusual winter with all the snow! We are planning another visit in March to stay with my father in law and get a better idea of whether or not this is a good fit. My daughter is chomping at the bit to get back to the mainland, we just need to find what will suite us. My father in law has been there since 2001 and has nothing but positive things to say so naturally he is really pushing for us to be there.

Mahalo again for all your help!!

I totally get it and that was actually my thought too. I will never be able to compare the diversity we have here in Hawaii. I guess what we hope for is tolerance, compassion, and understanding of these types of differences (like me being fair and my kids being very dark skinned). We have worked hard to raise our kids with an open mind however, we still deal with many underlying race issues here too. If you listen to podcasts, 'Offshore' is a great one that brings these issues to light in a understanding way with recent events. Usually a college campus will open this up and from the sounds of it, majority of the residents there are from other places. Fingers crossed!

IMO the percentage of OSU-C students that are minorities is too small to make a noticeable difference in the diversity of this area.

I would be surprised if your children run into any sort of racial problems in Bend.

The unenlightened residents, which means the original Bend Oregonians, all have children who are polite that have been taught good manners. Unless it offends you when a child says "yes, m'am", or "thank you m'am" they most likely won't give you any trouble.
