Our family of four is moving to Bend in 5 weeks. I have two sons and a husband who was offered a job there and he starts in a week. We will join him in Sept. I have so many questions? we are moving from Colorado Springs, CO. First of all we are looking to rent a house on the Eastside in the Bend HS district. My husband saw a lot of bad press on BEND HS...Is this true? This is a tough move for us but we have employment there so its better than Colorado. Is it worth it to find a rental (we want to rent first) in the Summit HS district or Mountain View....Nervous Mama....

Any school in Bend is perfectly fine for any kid who has a parent that is engaged with the education process. Pay attention, make sure your kid does and understands his homework, and he will be fine.

For the Summit service area you will need a mid to high 6 figure budget for the house, unless you look at Deschutes River Woods.

Mountain View HS is overall good... by statewide standards is "above average."

Bend High is about average. That makes it "bad" compared to Mountain View and Summit, but okay compared to the state. It is better than the other Central Oregon high schools, except *maybe* Redmond Ridgeview.

Bear Creek elementary is by far the worst school in Bend. Avoid any neighborhood that feeds into that, if possible. Other than that, the schools in Bend are fine.

Here's the thing - Summit HS service area is so damn rich, that in Bend you get to see education inequalities up front... except it's not even affluent vs. poor... it's very-rich vs. middle and working class. Bend does not really have any slums, but it has a bunch of wealthy California equity refugees with 750k+ houses that populate the Summit service area, and then it has middle and then working class areas.

I am Wondering what schools you choose for your boys and how you are liking living in Bend? We are possibly relocating there in the Fall and I have A 12 year old boy entering 7th grade.
Thanks so much!

I had kids that graduated from Summit and Bend High. Looking back I'd say the education at Bend High was excellent and we feel we had a very good connection with the teachers there. The kids had no problem getting into college.
