We're considering purchasing large acreage in Prineville to build on. It looks like sattelite internet is what's available. Does anyone have any experience with this? We currently use comcast and our kids use gaming systems/video streaming. We want to hard wire the new house rather than use wifi. Looks like cell service is an issue too? We'd appreciate any advice, contractor recommendations, experiences etc. How is the area for raising children? We are Oregonians currently serving in the military out of state.

For sat internet there are at least 2 issues that could pose a challenge.

1 - High speed data caps and video quality reduction. Check the fine print carefully.

2 - Latency for gaming. Last I checked the latency was too high for fast twitch games like first person shooters, MOBAs, and battle arena style games.

Just curious. Why would you want to hard-wire the new house rather than install WiFi? That is 15 year old technology and many devices don't even have ethernet ports available. Your kids are going to blow through a tremendous amount of data on their phones if you don't have wifi available at home. You going to drag cat5 cables around to hook up your old laptops or something?

You may want to investigate if microwave based wireless internet is available at your home site. When lived in rural Texas that was the option we had and it was superior to satellite. Google tells me these guys work in Prineville. You might want to see if they can reach your home site. It would be an alternative: Yellowknife Wireless

While Cat 5 is 20+ years old, that isn't what a new home would use. Instead they'd probably go with Cat 6 or Cat 8. IMO wired networks crush wireless for hardcore gaming and streaming HQ video from multiple locations.

Here's how playing on Wi-fi hurts your game

When it comes to gaming, any serious aficionado will tell you that a wired connection is best. Let me rephrase that to be clear: you would have to pry a diehard gamers wired connection from the grasp of their cold, dead hand. Capiche?

Your kids will not be video streaming with satellite internet. That is just not going to happen, ever. Zero chance.

My buddy has no problem streaming video via Sat. The only issue is the data cap.

It might be beneficial for you to see if Frontier.com can supply your needs near Prineville.

Well, OK. That makes sense if you have robust fiber coming to your front door. But if you are on a sketchy satellite or fixed microwave connection in a rural area then the household WiFi is hardly going to be the weak link in your system.

It depends on what is in the household. If you have ip security cams, media servers, backup server, gaming boxes, etc then wired wins.

I made the mistake of buying wifi based security cams that connected via wifi to a DVR thinking I could avoid running cables. I was wrong.

Thanks for all of this info. Yellowknife may work....I wonder if it's compatible with a hard wired home? We'd like the best option for our kids gaming/video needs.
