The small towns closest to Bend include Sisters to the west (expensive housing, not much employment opportunity except retail), Sunriver to the south (resort atmosphere, jobs in the service industries) and Redmond to the north. Further away are Prineville, LaPine and Madras. Central Oregon, as reported in today's Bend Bulletin newspaper, has a higher unemployment rate than average for Oregon at about 8%. This is mostly due to the decline in construction, but the service industry is also having problems. For example, one well-established Bend restaurant just closed its doors, letting go 40 people, a couple of weeks ago.

The majority of jobs in this area are in the service industry - restaurants, hotels, and retail. There are a few large employers, such as Les Schwab Tires which is moving its headquarters from Prineville to Bend this fall. There are many opportunities for medical specialists of all types. There is some opportunity in the aviation area with Cessna (in Bend) and of course there are admin staff needed - admin assistants, secretaries, bookkeepers. There are sometimes jobs with the State in departments like Social Services and ODOT. Check out the Bend Bulletin classifieds online for jobs to see what's out there. I highly recommend not moving to Central Oregon without first landing a job - there is a lot of competition. Also, be careful of Craigslist job postings. There are several bogus postings from phishers.
