Hi, My husband and I are looking at Bend to relocate from So Cal in a few months. We're concerned that there is not a VA hospital closr than Portland, which is at least 3 hours away. Any vets out there with any info we could use about this problem?

I'm confused, as there's no Bend in Washington state. Do you mean Bend, Oregon? Or North Bend, WA?

Sorry, I mean Bend, OR. We're also looking in the state of Wash., but it looks like Bend might be the better choice, although we're wondering about the VA medical situation there.

There is a large VA hospital in Roseburg, OR also. Not that this matters much, Portland is about 163 miles from Bend, Roseburg is closer to 209 miles away. But they are in different directions and afford you a choice. There is a VA Clinic in Eugene, which is closer than Portland or Roseburg at about 130 miles away. For the highest level of care and specialty care, the Portland VA is your facility of choice. I have been to both, the Portland VA is one of the nicer VA hospitals around. Hope this helps.

This doesn't relate to your question, but since you are vets you should know that Oregon has a home loan specific program for vets call ORVET. You can buy a home anywhere in Oregon. It's so much better than a regular VA loan. I plug as many relocating vets as I can into it. They are FABULOUS to work with and treat our vets well.

State of Oregon: ORVET Home Loans

I don't know if you plan to rent or buy a house, but wanted you to know about it in case know one tells you about it.

There are volunteers who drive vets to the VA hospital in Portland from Bend, in a van. I think it goes several times a week. It is not particularly satisfactory, but it is what is available. Bend, in spite of all of its publicity, is still rural and is a small town. I wouldn't be looking for a VA facility in this area any time soon.

Beachlady:

I'm in the same boat as you and your hubby. I decided to relocate to Roseburg since their VA hospital is the regional (main) veteran's facility for southern Oregon. Relocating close to and seeking treatment from the main facility, you cut down overall wait times since you aren't being routed through external clinics as you ultimately work up-channel to the main facility. It's kind of a one-stop shop and a vast improvement over West LA. If plans remain intact, I'll be in Roseburg late Feb or early March. Good luck.

Bend does have a VA clinic but the closest hospital would be Roseburg.
