I've had my experiences with the richie riches of Bend. My dad was bidding a landscape job at a house on Awbry Butte and he said "I live in Redmond." and the woman went "Oh. You're from THAT place." Do all Bend residents look down upon Redmond as if we are inferior to them or is it just the rich snootie ones? Because personally, I would much rather live in Redmond than Bend. Cheaper housing, less snobs. No offense to anybody from Bend

If she was from California, I wouldn't take offense by it. That's just how they talk. "That" and "the" are used in odd ways.

There's also a thing they do with shortening words and names, and saying things like "the fam" instead of "family"... "norcal" and "socal" instead of northern california and southern california... that kinda thing.

I've heard Bend is turning into California. They wrecked things beyond repair there and wanted out, so they discovered Bend and are slowly making it like the place they just escaped from. Brilliant, huh? I've yet to visit the area, it's just what we hear talked about everytime Bend, OR is mentioned. It's a bit of a running joke.

We see the same thing here with respect to Medford and Ashland. Ashland is the target for the wealthy ex-urban types, who would only leave the city to go to another outdoor mecca with other exurbanites. Many do not care for rural American culture (you know the type, build a McMansion in the countryside and complain about the cows), and in such places the locals get conveniently priced out. So, they cluster in Bend, Ashland, Bozeman, Nevada City, Durango, Aspen, Jackson Hole, etc. I think a lot of this division also stems from the obsession with schools. In a place like California, with so many rich and poor, the different neighborhoods often have vastly different wealth, parental education, ethnic profiles, and test scores. Folks are used to fighting tooth and nail to get in the best school districts, both for their kids, and because that has been a winning equation for home appreciation. And so the mythologize the vast differences between places in part for rationalization. The distinction between Bend and Redmond is not as large as the lady thinks, but that is because she has probably never been to Redmond or have any friends there. Most likely, all her friends are in Bend, or in Marin County, Ca.

So to answer your question, not everyone is like that in Bend, most likely she was a transplant from coastal Cal. They often seem to build the big houses and want to be in the best places exclusively. I would add there is a second group of hipsters, skier, rockclimber types there from Portland, Eugene that also might be a bit snobby. Don't know. I just recall the type from my days in Corvallis who were heading to Bend to "live the life."

It might also be a liberal/conservative divide. Many of the transplants are liberal, I am assuming Redmond is fairly conservative. That is the case with Ashland and Medford, though the latter is actually quite moderate these days. All this is rampant speculation, but fun. That one cuts both ways, in that each group looks down its nose on the other.

No I'm not doing the same because I personally don't mind Bend. I like the town. Just some of the people are unbearable because they think they are better than most other people. I don't think I'm better than anyone else.

Yes you are. You are putting down a group of people based on an assumption. Maybe she doesn't like Redmond because her ex lives there. Maybe she doesn't like Redmond because it is too laid back for her. Maybe she doesn't like Redmond because it is more conservative politically than she likes and she got in a bar fight once...

You are assuming that she thinks she is superior to you. You don't know why she doesn't like Redmond. I don't like Bend because it is too hot and dry for me. I physically don't feel well in that kind of heat. If I said to someone "How can you stand living there?" how would they interpret that? A million different ways based on their own personal insecurities, but for me that kind of comment would be about the heat and dryness.

Well the, you can just stay away from those people. For heaven's sake, you can't say everything single person in a town will all show the same behaviour.

Some people are snobs' some are not. If you are so sensitive as to what some people may think of you, I wonder if you will be happy anywhere. To tar an entire town with one brush is a bit judgemental on your part.

I was born and raised in so. cal...... and let me tell you... IT WAS THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES that drove me out of my home state..... (as people keep flooding calif... the prices for EVERYTHING keep going way UP)

If you are in Calif and ask where they were born.... 75% came from somewhere else.

So while many oregonians like to gripe about all the californians invading the state... I can understand..... because my state was overrun by EVERYONE... and allot of them don't speak to good ah english!!!!!!

As far as Bend residents "looking down" on other neighboring cities.... I would say that isn't so (but there are stuck-up people everywhere)

OH and BTW... it isn't Bend OR..... It is Bend, CA Us So Calif's had to escape somewhere

Well, the next time you move to a state you own, close and lock the gate behind you

If you live in or plan on moving to a wonderful place you think is just great, the chances are extremely high others will feel the same way and want to live there too.

I agree, to make such generalizations on an entite town/state because some people did not meet your expectations of who should live there, baffles.
