My DH and I will be visiting the Big Island soon and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for hotels or B&B's. I would preferably like somewhere near a white sand beach. I know that there are not many white sand beaches but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Any hotel/B&B on the Kona/Kohala coast will keep you within driving distance of a sandy beach. If you are staying for a while (3+ days in one location), check Big Island Vacation Rentals - VRBO® is Vacation Rentals by Owner Big Island - Big Island Hotels, Big Island Lodging, Big Island Travel and Tourism (http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/hawaii/big-island - broken link) for vacation rentals by owner. Puako might be a fun choice. It is a great place for vacation rentals. We go there once each year with visiting family members who love the area because it has such a "beach community" feel. It's also just minutes from state parks and resorts as well as Kawaihai, where there are a few restaurants that are open later than the resorts.

The Waikoloa Mariott Big Island Resort Hotel | Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa | Big Island, Hawaii Vacation is a favorite of mine for short stays. Shops are nearby and the rooms are recently renovated (with the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on). Infinity pool and new bar by the pool. There has been some construction the last few times I've stayed there, but they seemed to be nearly pau (finished) and the pools are all completed.

I think you mentioned exploring Ocean View Estates in an earlier post, so you might want to search the VRBOs in Ka'u as well. Black sand beach close by...Punalu'u Black Sand Beach - Big Island of Hawaii.

Closer to Kona, but still putting you in proximity to Ocean View is the Captain Cook/Kealakekua area...A few B&Bs listed at Kealakekua, Hawaii Bed and Breakfasts and Country Inns -- BBOnline... Bed & Breakfast Inns ONLINE

Hope this helps...

Cynthia
