Red face moving to either hilo or kona ---ideas for jobs and homes???

My family and I are interested in moving to either Hilo or Kona by May of 2012. We both are looking for jobs, as well as a place to live. We are looking for at least a two bedroom place to live, we are interested in either a house or apartment, we would really like to rent to own, but we would rent if that was the only option. We have two kids that will be joining us on the move, one will be in 7th grade the other will be turning 4. He was born on the Island and has family there, we feel that it is time for our children to know his family as they have gotten to know mine. He works in a security job and has over 3 years of experience. I have my associates degree in child and family development and over 10 year of experience in child care, clerical, and customer service. Please if you have any leads that will help me and my family with jobs, a place to live and information on schools and child care please email me at blueonxy-at-gmail.com.
Thank you in advance for you help.

I noticed that this is your first post. Have you looked through the many threads on this forum that discuss the current job situation and also schools? There are people on the forum from all of the islands, so there will be some discussions about the Big Island. It's real easy to do a forum search.

The island is all about family. Ask them for advice on where to live and work and they will probably be your best resource for finding both. Generally, folks new to the island are not at the top of the list for employers to hire since they are very likely to leave soon, but having family nearby means they are much more likely to stay. Which side of the island is your family on? That's the side you'd probably want to move to. Perhaps you'd be able to start a child care place or something? It's much easier to get employed if you make your own job.

You may want to focus some time on what city you want to live - then dive deeper into making it happen, Kona and Hilo and vastly different from each other - different industries, different weather, different opportunities, etc.

Neither Kailua in the Kona district nor Hilo are exactly a "city". They are a large town more than anything else. Usually Hilo is seen as less expensive to live although there aren't usually as many jobs there. I think the unemployment is around or over 9% at the moment, although I don't keep track. Any way you can make your own work is best, IMHO.

Aloha and welcome to the forum,

I have a few questions for you if you dont mind this will help us advise you on your move.

Have you been to the Big Island before?
How long have you stayed? if you have been here?
Are you aware of the school situations on Hawaii?
How much stuff and cars are you planning on bringing with you?

My advise to you while you answer these is to read as much here as possible this will answer a multitude of impending questions.

Good luck
Koa

You do need to come here first and check things out. We just moved to Keaau near Hilo almost two months ago, but had bought our house here early lastb year after some trips over. We retired, so I can't spek much as to jobs. I have heard jobs are somewhat hard to find here. I would guess there are more service related jobs in the Kona area, and that tourist related jobs would be more plentiful there. But I also understand houses are much more expensive there also. Kona is certainly drier than Hilo, but has more of a VOG problem.
Myself, I love the Puna area, and I love Hilo. I'm not such a big fan of Kona. I'm told Hilo gets 130 inches of rain per year.
We live in Hawaiin Paradise Park, where the lots (most of them) are an acre.
Please come and spend some time here, both in Hilo and Kona, before you decide where to move to, and even IF you want to move to the Big Island. It's quite an undertaking to sell your mainland house and make the move here. You do not want to find out that you made a mistake. We love it here, but everyone is different.

May you make the right choice for you.

jon

One good job would be to get into the tourism industry. Get a job at one of the many hotels around Kona. Or become a scuba diving instuctor.

That's like telling the unemployed to get a job in one of the companies that are hiring....

Firstt hat would work, IF THEY ARE HIRING, not that good advice if they are LAYING OFF!

Scuba diving instructor??? Might as well telll them to be a new car auto assembles and move to Detroit.

Are you at all familiar with Hawaii's and the Big Island current employment picture?

Just seemed like an idea. I visited Kona, Hawaii almost 20 years ago (Feb, 1992) and those jobs were popular there back then.
