Since I re-booked my trip I did things a little differently. You guys convinced me to go with the tours. I rented a mid-size car instead and I'm doing an ATV tour of Waipio Valley and one of those Stars tours of Mauna Kea. I still want to see the green sand beach, but as I understand it it's only a 3-6 mile hike from the normal parking area

Actually, the Green Sand Beach is a 2 mile hike from the parking area. It seems like it's 3 times longer because you'll be walking into the wind. But it's mostly flat and definitely worth it for the prize at the end. Make sure you take plenty of water!

As to the hike at Green Sands, there are a number of locals with 4x4 trucks that hang around near the parking lot. For a "donation", they will take you to the cliff and back... The walk is rather difficult as well as what the wind, sun and dust that you will encounter will throw at you.
