The Atlanta-based company that originally proposed a massive Kailua-Kona area development (named Kona Kai Ola) has revised it's plans in response to community and County Council input. The plans originally called for an 800-slip marina, but according to this recent article, that number has been cut in half: Hawaii Tribune-Herald :: Hilo, Hawaii (http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/articles/2007/09/08/local_news/local07.txt - broken link) The developer has some interesting proposals. Many new projects on the drawing board right now are including "self-sustaining" and "green" community concepts--it would be great to see some of these actually implemented!

I'd like to see what the Jacoby Group has done in Atlanta first. I've seen too many so-called "self-sustaining" and "green" developments in other areas devolve into just luxury housing accompanied by a strip mall. It's easy for developers to "talk the talk," but few of them can "walk the walk."

I totally agree. I am hoping to see some sincere effort to make the proposals a reality. Both here and on Oahu. There are some proposed projects for the area near Kapolei that look quite impressive--on paper!
