I find that many newcomers who live on the neighbor islands are grossly unaware of the expenses related to accessing medical care on Oahu.
Airfare, accommodations, meals, transportation. Often a huge shock.
And they don't realize that they might not be able to leave Oahu after being discharged from a hospital here. Physicians may place restrictions on air travel after procedures or surgeries, especially if neurological issues are involved.
And then there are the follow-up appointments. More inter-island travel.
I wonder how much free health care services are dispensed each year to people who are non-resident's;
woofers, people who move with little or no assets, insurance, etc. and, what impact if any this has on the health system as a whole in Hawaii ?
