Default Affordable Apartments in Hawaii

Are there any affordable 1-2 bedroom apartments in Hawaii ($1,000-1,600) that allow for dogs? I've never been to Hawaii, will graduate with my BSN in 2013 and do hope to spend some time working there after passing the NCLEX-RN.

Any insight appreciated.

Thanks

Head to craigslist - and check the box for dogs - that'll give you semse of your options.

Your potentially bigger issue is too many nurses and too few nursing jobs on Oahu.

If I ever move to Honolulu, landlords are going to be amazed to meet the first mainlander who isn't coming with a dog

LOL! Well, I don't have a dog. But what if I want one? I want to have the option, you know?

Here on the Big Island you should be able to find an apartment in your range, yes, but something like 90% of the available places do not accept dogs. So there's a big trade-off to consider.

If you don't have a dog, then you may just want to keep things uncomplicated for yourself until you know the area better. There are plenty of apartments for rent, not many if any that allow dogs. Cats... maybe. My friend has an awesome apartment that she has part of for rent right now. Excellent security, astounding view, right down town. A large bedroom with its own bathroom and balcony overlooking the Hilo Lagoon and the Bay, share the kitchen and living room. There's laundry just down the hall and a swimming pool. Fishing is allowed at the Lagoon. All utilities paid, $850/month. :O

If you don't now have a dog, don't get one on the mainland if you are headed here. Just wait until you arrive, Hawaii has lots of dogs (and cats) that could use good homes. And you'll avoid having to deal with quarantine.

Great post...and they will also avoid a huge expense by waiting. Between all of the vet costs, application fees, and transportation, it's costing a small fortune to move my dogs with me. That's not a complaint, I'm happy to be bringing them...I'm just emphasizing to OP that what CyberCity wrote is good advice.

Well, there's the other recent poster looking for a roomie there at Hilo Lagoon. So if you're willing to share...

As far as pets, my horse friend there in Puna was trying to convince me to get rescue horses here on the mainland and ship them to the B.I. at $3,500 a pop. The headache and red tape sounded unreal. Not for me, but hey, to each his own. Like Tiger Beer, when I come to the B.I., it's just myself and that's enough to take care of!
