Default Doctor looking for affordable small towns?

Are there affordable small towns in Hawaii where a doctor could find employment (without having to commute?)

Thanks
JD

Two areas to consider on the Big Island for a small-town atmosphere would be Hilo and Waimea. The Waimea medical center has a great reputation. I've known friends who have driven there from Puna to give birth.

Please go to Hilo. Hilo is in need of good doctors and the housing there is very affordable.

Yes, I too have heard that the Thelma Parker Med Center is quite good.

Could you give an estimate of housing costs in Hilo and Waimea? Do you have the names or contact info for these medical centers?

Thanks for the information.

JD

Hi drlabash,

Housing can vary widely within each area...many choices.

If you would like me to email a list of available homes to you I would be happy to do that (based on your preferences bedrooms/baths/new construction or old...) Just DM me by clicking on the screen name in the top left. (To send you an email through the MLS system, I have to have a contact email address.) The list I can send has click-able links that allow you to read the listing agent's description of the home, the tax info and a link for all the photos...

Hilo Medical Center: East Hawaii Region of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation
North Hawaii Community Hospital: North Hawaii Community Hospital | Holistic Care | Complementary Healing Practices (broken link)

I work in the field and will tell you this, Waimea is actually called North Hawaii Community Hospital. It is a private facility (good and bad I guess, the pay is generally higher) but Waimea is a lot more expensive to live than Hilo. Kona and Hilo hospitals are both State run. Depends on what kind of doctor you are? We are in desperate need of good Orthopedic surgeons and OB practitioners for sure(especially in Waimea), although any doctor would find a lot of work here locally.
