Mahalo
Try the South Kona district. It's higher and wetter than Kona, but not as wet as the Hilo side.

Is the weather there completely unpredictable? Do people even bother with 'weather forecasts' in Hawaii?

I've got to think Hawaii is one the easiest places to predict weather - the temperature doesn't vary much - there are consistent wet (windward) and dry areas (leeward) - it isn't terribly complex.

Nope, we never listen to weather reports, we already know what they are going to say. "Tradewinds ten to fifteen miles per hour, occasional windward and mauka showers. Temperature 78 during the day and 68 at night." There's about a ten degree rise in the middle of summer and about a ten degree decrease in the middle of winter. Oh, in the winter time the winds occasionally blow the other direction. That's for the whole overall island, though, individual areas will have different typical weather. And those individual areas are not that far apart. I've seen it rain on one side of the street and not the other. Which is one of the reasons why we always suggest to folks to visit and live here for six months first so they can see where and what the typical weather patterns are before investing time and money into buying a house.
