What are the best months for visiting the Big Island? I know the winter months are good for whale sightings. But I was thinking late October to early November would be good. Any suggestions?

That time period would be good for avoiding the summer and winter tourists, so probably you can get better prices on lodging and rental cars. Weather should be good then, too, altho when isn't the weather good here? Last Fall and Winter was very rainy, but that doesn't mean that it will be the same this Fall and Winter.

We are here now and the weather is good and I haven't seen any crowds. Volcano park is because of the current eruptions going on. The home i rented in HPP was lower in cost too.

I was there in November, I had good weather except for one major downpour. So I guess I picked a good time. Thanks for the Info.

How many off road trails are there to go 4 wheeling, around waterfalls and caves?

Not very many, to my knowledge. On the south end of the island, 4-wheeling roads that I know of are Road to the Sea, the road to Manuka Bay, the Green Sand Beach, and Ka'alu'alu Bay. We also taken the SUV on the Mana Road around the east flank of Mauna Kea, to the observatories on the top of Mauna Kea, and down into the Waipio Valley. Sorry, no waterfalls or caves.

Ya I know about Road to the sea and South Point. I have seen some U-Tube vids of some off-road trails leading out to a beach, but I can't remember where it was.
It's just something I was thinking of doing when I get there.

One thing to consider.
If you are going to go wheeling, you may want to look for areas with roads/trails that are mostly dirt. The few times I have taken my 4runner off-roading on sections with mostly exposed lava, I am floored at how quickly it eats up my brand new tires. Lava is sharp and will tear up tires quickly.
