Like I said, that ended a couple of years ago. But the road is much, much better now... wider, straighter, smoother. It used to be considered one of the most dangerous roads in the state, but I think it's now the best stretch of highway on the island now.

Of course, they couldn't do anything about the altitude... it still crests at 6,632 feet... so some traffic is still pretty slow. But at least there are now places to get around them.

But I have a slightly older map from the University of Hawai'i Press on my wall which clearly flags Saddle Road with the rental car warning, now moot.
At the time this thread was created, people were still posting as fact that you could not drive a rental car over Saddle Road. I started this thread in order to help future readers know that the rental car ban was history. If future posters on this thread feel like arguing over the definition of "myth", have a ball.

I agree. I drove it plenty of times back in the late 80s and other than a couple of curves (with more than enough caution signs) the road was no big deal. It was no interstate but always seemed like just a regular road to me. Definitely a gorgeous drive though.

Default Car Rental Agreement

This is from my Enterprise Car Rental Agreement, rent at Kona airport:
#4 - Limits on Use & Termination of Right to Use
(10) Vehicle shall not be driven on an unpaved road or off-road

At least with Enterprise the Saddle Road should not pose a problem.

It isn't a problem with anyone any more. The restrictions on Saddle Road were all lifted a couple of years ago, as noted earlier in this thread.
