Drove by Uncle Able's protest site and see the county has put up gates at two of the entrances where he was set up. What happened to him? Last time I was here, June 2011, his flag was raised high. Did he get booted off? If so, does anyone know what he's doing?

Thanks for the article. There were several large trucks along the highway...I guess they were putting up the gates. I didn't see gates there when I was last by there, 1 March.

I Googled "Abel Simeona Lui" and found that he had been convicted of murder in 1977 and sentenced to jail, but it didn't say for how long. He shot and killed someone during an argument.

Sometimes things are more tangled than first glance, especially for happenings 35 years ago.

Quote:
Appellant, Abel Simeona Lui, charged with murder for the shooting death of Don Anthony Gomes, was convicted by a jury of manslaughter on April 11, 1977. On July 7, 1976, several hours before the homicide, at the end of a fist fight between the parties [Abel Simeona Lui and Don Anthony Gomes], appellant [Lui] claimed deceased [Gomes] threatened him: "I'm going to blow your f head."
Quote:
Following the fight, appellant [Lui] went to his mother's home, armed himself with a handgun and returned to the scene of the fight. While talking to a friend who was in a parked automobile, appellant observed deceased [Gomes]approaching his direction from the opposite side of the street. He [Lui] then disengaged his conversation, headed toward deceased and shot him while approximately 10 feet away. Appellant [Lui] testified he thought deceased [Gomes] was reaching for a gun. Deceased was in fact unarmed.
Quote:
The trial court did not admit into evidence: (1) testimony of appellant that he [Lui] knew, at the time of the homicide, that deceased [Gomes] had beaten and raped a 13-year-old girl; (2) testimony of the police officer who arrested deceased [Gomes] for the rape and who personally interviewed the complainant; and (3) deceased's [Gomes] conviction record of assault in the third degree, criminal property damage in the third degree and driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor.
Meanwhile, September 21, 1976:
Quote:
This is an appeal from a judgment of conviction of rape in the first degree. Defendant-appellant [Gomes] died the day before oral argument on the merits was scheduled in this court. The State has moved that the appeal be dismissed, allowing appellant's [Gomes] conviction below to stand.
