I know the big island does have some sort of transportation, but I'm not sure if it's any good. Is it possible to get by in this area using only public transportation?

Dismal. Most people without cars bum rides/hitchike. The bus comes by once in the morning and once in the evening. If this has changed, someone chime in.

I could be wrong, but I thought they added a couple of stops. I think it is 2 in the AM and 2 in the PM. Anyone?

The Hawaii county website lists 8 daily runs between Hilo and Kona, 6 daily to Keaau and Pahoa, 2 to the Kau area. The bus is free.
