See that's what I don't get. Only about 250,000 people in Hawaii have any Hawaiian blood in them. That's about 1/5 of the entire state population. And 39% of Hilo is Japanese. I'm part Japanese (though you couldn't tell) and I've been around Japan and saw nothing but respect from the Japanese at all times. Ive also been around Hilo and around locals and never once had a problem, actually got a few smiles.

So for those of you who have in fact experienced any discrimination...were they by the Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc) or mainly by Pacific Islander type peoples?

You know Brav, I don't think it's the racial discrimination on the Big Island that puts people off so much, heck, the minority in Hawaii is the majority, it's the rampant cannabalism that really has folks concerned, especially around Hilo town. You would think something could be done about it??????

Aloha and okolemaluna

My eyes hurt from reading these posts!
Common sense is all that is called for here. I doubt that anyone posting here lives in an "Amish" like environment and I’m sure everyone uses some level of caution in their everyday lives, especially in cities with lots of people, so just keep your eyes and ears open and if in doubt refer to the hundreds of guide books available on the market for safe places to stay/go. Gosh, this is Hawaii we’re talking about for goodness sake. Come on over to NYC and go into the Bronx or the bowels of Brooklyn (and LOTS of other places) - now your talking about something to be scared about! There are "bad" people everywhere; it's just a part of life. I wonder though, because of our travels throughout the South Pacific over the years getting to know quite a few, Tahitians, Fijians and Maoris, if what I’m reading is not simply a manifestation of being "cheeky;" that is, telling half -truths. So I would imagine there is some of that going on here. My parents always taught me to exercise common sense and be "street smart". I would imagine the same should apply in Hawaii.

Yea Kimo, you 110% correct, little common sense is all it takes. One or two people, heck, maybe a 100, out of how many thousands, have a bad experience, and all of the sudden Hilo is the most racist, prejudiced spot on the planet? Ha awi mai imaha, give me a break!!!!! That's why I mentioned the cannibalism thing, much to Roccos dismay, it's kind of equally absurd. I've lived here, primarily on Maui, since 1975, I might stay, still checking it out though. An brudda Kimo, does Uncle Lolo get one deal for you, try check em out!!!!!!!

Aloha and okolemaluna

Sure, I look like I'm from Honolulu or something but jeez.... Anyway, I never went back to Jimmy's which is too bad cause the food was ono!
I want to add that my story shows that it doesn't matter if you're a haole or not. Sometimes you come across some folks that are just plain rowdy. Doesn't matter where you are.

Most of the time the people you come across on the Big Island will be happy, friendly and welcoming. I think you will have a great trip.
