Geesh - enough is enough already! I would welcome a hurricane if I knew it would stop the lava flow but we all know THAT is not going to happen. So it's just another disaster to look forward to. Oh how fun!
It's been named "ANA" now, does that mean it's getting worse? We just had a thunderstorm blow through the island yesterday but it's back to sunshine today. Kinda windy sunshine, though.

Yes, it got worse - now a tropical storm and expected to become a hurricane - on track to strike the Big Island on the current path around Sunday morning.
Just a question because i don't know this history, i know being Hawaii we have alot of storms. But is it rare to have so many storms & hurricanes in hawaii in such a short period of time? I believe on average there is 2 major storms a year. This year just in the last four months we will have 4. Thats unheard of. Weather changes? I wouldn't even wish that on my enemies. Man sorry guys.
Hard to say what is normal. This is from your link (emphasis added): "A Hawaiian hurricane is a tropical cyclone that forms in the Pacific Ocean and affects the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaiʻi lies in the central Pacific, where about four or five tropical cyclones appear each year, although as many as eleven have occurred, such as in the 1992 and 1994 seasons; rarely do these storms actually affect Hawaiʻi. Tropical cyclone records were not kept before the 1950s. Earlier windstorms that struck Hawaiʻi were not labeled as hurricanes."
Four storms in the last four months? Iselle made landfall as a strong tropical storm and caused a lot of damage. Julio went north of us and didn't have any impact. We are watching Ana and don't know yet whether or not there will be impact (keeping our fingers crossed). Can't think of a fourth one.
Last year Tropical Storm Flossie was a non-event. It's probably been ten years since we've had major rain/wind from a passing hurricane. This year does seem to be abnormal, especially with a hurricane forming this late in the season.
This has better information - the season ends Nov 30, and right about now, the water is about peak in terms of temperature, which hurricanes thrive on.
The current season is tied for the most active since 1992.
