Be cautious swimming anywhere from South Point around to Hilo. The surf is hazardous, unpredictable and the currents are very, very strong. You can easily get pulled out to sea.

I like Big Island Divers, but there are a number of good oufits. But most will take you by boat to places you can probably reach from shore. So cheapest will be to rent tanks and shore-dive. There are numerous sites and all you need to do is choose a day when the surf is calm. Plenty of those.

Drey1891 - If you're unsure about diving on your own contact a dive shop and ask them if they have a dive guide for hire (usually a Dive Master). They would be local, have a wealth of info and know the best places to dive as well as what's safe.
