Heart attack, so what? I mean - wouldn’t a heart attack be prompted by the conditions? My point was, these tours aren’t risk free.

Yup.

Especially reading between the lines, it seems this little tour group was likely off of the popular spots along that lava viewing/access road and was trying to get to a more interesting/lesser-visited site that the leader knew.

So it likely could've been more lava in the area and being more remote as well. Definitely increases the already risky thing of hiking to see active lava flows

Well, in theory it seems to me that the young men did the right thing by seeking out an experienced guide to take them, rather than venturing out on their own.

Definitely not risk free, but nor is taking a Hawaii beach swim-or crossing the street for that matter.

The departed gentleman was a super experienced tour guide. He tackled one of the rare grey areas, still in dispute back then: how dangerous is it to stand over a steam vent during rain.

I bike and hike to the lava every week, as a visitor. If you can feel heat, it's pretty self-explanatory. The lava is not out there to get you.
