When I hiked it I met some BI kids on their first backpacking trip. Had very heavy packs. I asked how much weight they were carrying and they said they didn't know, just threw things in they thought they would need and lots of food. On my way back down the Z trail I started find discarded food...2.5 lb cans of Dinty Moore Stew, Spam, etc. Those kids learned pretty quick you have to plan backpacking trips.
