Default Best family beaches on BI?

I keep hearing how many black lava beaches there are on the BI. Can you tell me which beaches on the BI really rock for families?

Any great snorkeling beaches for six year olds?

Thanks!!

Alley

Pickup a copy of "Hawaii The Big Island Revealed" by Andrew Doughty. Make sure it is at least the 5th edition. You can also go to his website to get current updates.

But don't let anyone know you have the book or they may spit on you. That fellow has gotten several nice spots closed because too many people were going to "secret" spots. Obviously he doesn't know the difference between "secret" and "private property".

There aren't a lot of beaches on the Hilo side, although folks like to go to Richardson's since it has some lines of rocks out in the water to make protected swimming. It is a rocky/sandy beach. On Kona side there are beaches with more sand.

Kahalu'u Beach in Kona is one of the easiest snorkel spots around. Other good family spots are the beach at the Honokohau Harbor, Kua Bay, and Hapuna Beach.

Thank you Everyone!!!

I've heard that the Revealed books are not revered on the island -- specifically because of what Hotzcatz says: he advocates trampling on private property.

Just what Hawaii needs.

Actually, if you read the book, he never advocates trampling on private property. He explains exactly where the public access is and he does advise when property owners have improperly or illegally placed "NoTresspass" or "KAPU" signs on public property, which is quite common.
