Welcome tamwal. My husband and I moved to the BI (not Hilo area) 5 years ago from Denver. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. Sorry I can't help with more specific Hilo info. Don't rent anything sight unseen, unless you are going to stay in a VRBO place while you look for a rental.

I agree with Hotzcatz that you should start a new thread.

I have been using a mild (10% or so) mix of bleach and water in a plastic spray bottle. I also tried a generic Windex cleaner which was also effective, but not as quick.

Wasp and hornet spray and many other insecticides and pesticides are strong poisons with often very long half-life. I think mechanical means like a pellet gun or trap would be far preferable for the environment...

Pesticides and poisons really are nasty chemicals that we shouldn't be dumping into the environment. They have long-term consequences that are not immediately obvious.

Fortunately hydrated lime also kills coqui frogs and the lime is usually used as a soil amendment to sweeten acidic soils.

First, would you consider OceanView a safe place for a 53 year old woman
to live alone? Second, what about the chances of a volcanic eruption? Okay, you can laugh but not only do I value safety but if I end up paying 'a fortune to insure my home or lose my biggest investment under lava,
not good (:. Also, I am going to take some quiet time to recalibrate after
going way too hard at first. But am athletic and friendly ( from PA originally) and wonder if people are friendly and if you know any cool
people in Ocean View? It is beyond helpful to read the 'inside line" so THANK YOU and wishing YOU everything interesting. Cheers, Tina
I wont pretend I am some know it all on Oceanview - in fact I am far from. I haven't spent much time there. However, having once considered it as an option. I am glad I didnt. It is a bit lack luster for me. There just really isn't much there. If you like looking at a lot of lava, it is your place. It is rebuilding with vegetation, but in general.. there is a lot of black.

If I was your age, and moving to an unknown place alone.. I would probably shoot for Na'alehu, Pahala, Kalapana, or Pahoa. But that is just me. Good luck on whatever you choose!
