I don't blame you; I recommend you do a vaction rental for a month before selecting an area and home to rent long term or buy. The state of Hawaii is the land of the barking dog, crowing roster (esp Kauai) and loud U.H. Football TV parties. I live in the middle of 2 acres in a nicer neigborhood and have neighbors on 3 sides with barking dogs.

uh-oh... didn't re-read all the posts in this thread, but have we mentioned coqui frogs here yet?

Here's a short video I posted a while back when I was testing out my BlackBerry video...if you are thinking of living in East Hawaii, you'll have to take into account the night noise of the invasive coqui: Coqui video

Koa and Balad... our Hilo house is just a few hundred yards from where the first coquis established themselves in Hilo, at least as we hear the story now. Unfortunately, they are this loud in a lot of places now, so we don't feel too bad about it anymore

In Nanawale... they are loud, unless you practice coqui-elimination practices. No vegetation near the house and going out at dusk to locate and destroy any that dare to come near is how to do it.
We can leave the windows open and still hear the television!

They have made their way to parts of Honoka'a(and many other parts of the island over the past few years). Just caught our first one last night! Little bugger is in the freezer as we speak.
