Thursday morning early, like 2am-ish, some trash person drove into our local zoo and took 3 exotic birds. The owner of the zoo lives on site, and heard the car pull in. He looked out and saw this man going into one of the buildings, going back and forth to his car carrying things.

Naturally, the zoo owner called 911. When the car left the premises, the police were waiting right outside the back entrance, and turned on the lights & sirens, chasing him. It became a high speed chase which ended, tragically, with the car going off the road into some trees, crashing and burning.

The robber died in the crash. He had a large amount of cash in the car, as well as a gun and 3 birds stolen from the zoo. A white bellied Caique, a Blue Indian Ringneck, and a Senegal parrot.

Sadly, the Caique, who was found limping from the vehicle, died a few hours later. She was a bit of a celebrity, the Caique, named Kiwi. She was apparently the star of the bird show at the zoo, and also made many nursing home and school visits.

The Ringneck is still missing, and the Senegal was found this afternoon at a local gas station.

What makes someone do something like this? These are not big dollar birds! The car was a BMW, not a cheap car, the amount of cash in the car was substantial. The guy was a married man with children.

I hope they find the Blue, there have been some sightings around the area.

That's terrible, why people steal birds is beyond me, it's a PET, it's part of someone's family.

Yes, it is sad. I feel worse about the birds than the robber. Keep in mind this thread was started in April.
