My car is parked outside. This year the jays are perching on top of it and making a real mess all over it. Tried putting shiny foil garland on top but didn't work and it's too windy here anyhow. Suggestions please?

It may seem like overkill, but you can always buy a car cover. They're available in a lot of catalogs for people who don't have garages and don't want to clean snow and ice off their cars. It's a lot easier than trying to make the birds move.

Jays are very smart. Have you tried snapping a rag at them when they are there? They will get the message, but if your car is the best perch around, they will just go there when you are not around. Therefore, make a better place for them, such as sticking some large old branches or similar items in the ground AWAY FROM your car. The first time they head toward your car, keep snapping the rag at them, but never snap it if they perch on your substitute perch. You can even point to the new perch and firmly say, "Go THERE!"

These birds have my high roof top to perch on as well as several trees. Maybe they just like Subarus :-). I agree about running out to scare them away.
