For my money, the best all-around BBQ is Full Moon.
The most over-rated is Dreamland. Toughest ribs I've ever had.

It may be a chain, but Jim-N-Nick's is the best in my opinion. When hubby & I were dating, had both just graduated & moved to B'ham, everyone told us Johnny Ray's. It's good & we both like their chicken blonde (all white meat) & LOVE the Johnny Ray's pies...Honey's pies are TO DIE FOR!!!
Then, we tried Jim-N-Nick's & preferred their barbeque. The cheese biscuits are so heavenly there are no words...they sell them by the half dozen or dozen :-)
Can you tell I'm missing my B'ham Barbeque...there are NO places even close to edible for barbeque in the mid-atlantic where hubby & I moved a few months ago!!!

Have you tryed Red, Hot, And Blue--they're a chain, but their combination platter (half-and-half dry and wet) is great IMO. I know they had an store on Maryland's Eastern Shore, just after you come off the bay bridge, but that may be their northern-most location.

My favorite BBQ is Full Moon. A close second is a little BBQ place in Clay called Legends Smokehouse. Just had some last night. Being from the North, I didn't even know what real BBQ was 'til I moved down here!

We went to Bob GIbson's in Decatur yesterday. OMG! I wasn't particularly impressed with the great reviews plastered on the walls, or the 5' tall trophies in the entranceway, but when I was served a full plate of ribs, with a side of their vinegar based cole slaw, I was hooked. I've been to Demitri's, Dreamland, the various chains, and this was the best BBQ I've ever had, bar none.
Part of the experience is the sour coleslaw, which wipes your tongue of the ribs flavor, so that you get to taste it fully each time you switch back to eating the ribs. Clever, and it works.

Glad you liked Gibson's ribs, Harry! I am still mad at them for their pork BBQ, which is not nearly as good as it used to be. I don't think they make their own pies anymore, either. The coconut used to be to die for...now it's OK, but you'll keep on living.
I wanted to mention an awesome place we've only been to once - Boar's Butt in Winfield, Ala. It's off the beaten path - I mean Winfield is on the way to nothing. But the "Q is fantastic! I'd love to put one of their T shirts on my husband - on the back it states: "Best Butt in Alabama!"
