Sounds like an area I'd really enjoy living in. I can't imagine separating myself from real people and real life. Yes, I happen to be "white" But, I've never ever thought myself better or superior or different then anyone else. Except that I don't tan, I "Pinkify" LOL But, who cares? I don't. Up here you're lucky to find anything decent for under -and I may be wrong but like $200,000? Average cost can easily be $300,00 for nothing special. Gaia, you have given me hope!! yeah!
You may have misinterpreted the post - "40k more" not "40k" is the way I read it.

Pleasant Grove and Hueytown are actually two areas that are in "transition" from white to black. Five years ago there were practically no black people in Hueytown or Pleasant Grove, now they are probably around 50/50. For sale signs are up all over the place.

There's a lot of new construction around Odenville, Springville, Margaret, Moody area. Pretty nice area, more or less rural. If you will be commuting to Birmingham Moody is closest.

Many from the Warrior River area live in the Western Jefferson CO Cutoff (Hueytown, Concord, Oak Grove). Many also have houses on the local lakes. If you want an honest and knowledgeable view of the area - contact the Hueytown Area Chamber of Commerce. They have a list of local, reputable real estate agents that will give you an honest view of the western cutoff area. Please don't depend on agents that do not live in the area.

Trussville's not that bad traffic-wise when compared to anything on 65 S of Bham. Especially if you go out past the Trussville-Pinson exit, towards Deerfoot Parkway. You can avoid all of the in-town traffic that way. I liked living in Homewood. It's convenient to practically everywhere. I don't think the schools in Vestavia are really bad, just very upper class white oriented. Leeds and Moody wouldn't be too bad. Irondale should be fairly cheap too, and at least partially diverse, as it's close to Mt. Brook. I think Irondale proper is mostly black, but there should still be other ethnicities in there too. I think I'd rather stay on the north side of town if I wasn't going to be near the city center, simply because there's less traffic out this way.
