Inclusive Special Education in Vestavia Hills, Mtn. Brook, and Hoover areas? (Birmingham: houses, middle schools)

We have a child in third grade who is included in class with typically developing peers, with special accommodations. We are looking for the elementary and middle schools that are most forward thinking about inclusion in the general education classroom for children with moderate special needs. We will not consider self-contained environments. Our child is very sociable, popular and well-liked by peers, and thrives in a typical classroom.

I know that middle school and HS in mt brook include special needs children - they have assistants that assist these students in their classes-I assume it is the same in elementary- call the board of ed and ask any ?'s that you may have.

My 4 year old is a "typical" in an inclusive class at Paine Primary School and we are thrilled with the quality of attention to all of the students. We live in Trussville. Opposite side of downtown from where you're looking, but it may be worth considering.

Trussville is very similar to Vestavia in terms of household income, but you get a lot more house for the money in Trussville.

I'd love to consider Trussville, but my job is in Tuscaloosa . I'm tired of Tuscaloosa schools for ALL of my kids, so the drive will be worth it, and DH can finally work in Birmingham -- which provides him much better opportunities.

It is hard...our budget is $300,000.00 and you get so much more for your money in Hoover than MB or Vestavia -- and I don't know if I can handle an old house that needs a ton of updates....sigh! This is going to be a long 8 months, .

Yeah, commuting to Tuscaloosa sort of knocks Trussville out.

Vestavia would be my first choice on that side of the county. In "old Vestavia" you will see a lot of fixer uppers in your price range. However, I have seen some good buys in Vestavia a little further south on Hwy 31 and in the Cahaba Heights area of VH. Best of luck to you!

I think Hoover is worth a look, because it's that much closer to Tuscaloosa. It's an excellent school system, and the price points on houses are pretty good.
