Crestwood is pretty nice and a lot cheaper than Homewood. There are only one or two areas that you would want to avoid. Crestwood would be Birmingham public schools, although there are a number of private schools in the area as well.

City schools are pretty much to be avoided, no matter where you live. But there are nice/safe neighborhoods in the city. They tend to be areas with nice historic homes. They vary in price, with the pricier ones landing on top, but I'd rank them sort of like this (YMMV):

Redmont
Forest Park/Highland Park
Diaper Row
Crestwood, Mountaindale/Glenview/Crestline Gardens area
Five Points (between 20th St. and Highland Park)
Avondale/Avonwood, Glen Iris, Roebuck Springs
East Lake (as far east as possible), Southside (west of 20th St., south of UAB - lots of apartment infill here, so very block-by-block)

Crestwood's a wonderful neighborhood comparable to the immediate southern suburbs (Homewood, for instance) but it is within the jurisdiction of Birmingham city schools. I went to magnet schools in Birmingham City for 6-12th grades and it was OK, but schools over the mountain are better, quite frankly.
