Driving through Birmingham and I'm looking for a good place to eat. As I look online, a lot of places are not open when I'll be there. I need a place that's open for dinner on a Monday night - not too expensive - that has great local food.

Where will you be? Lots of great local places, two of which are Beard finalists. One was named on the country's top five restaurants.

Monday night, alas, is a tough night, since most of the nicest places are closed then.

We'll be around the airport area in a couple of weeks.

Not much near the airport, I'm afraid. In fact, if you're looking for a nice place to stay that represents Birmingham a good deal better, I'd recommend a hotel close to the Five Points South area. You'd be within strolling distance of a number of good restaurants. Meanwhile, I wouldn't want to stroll anywhere outside around the airport.

So I've heard. Hotel is booked and we're only stopping for the night. We want to eat a dinner that represents the area, possibly soul food. Also, is there anything on the East side that has a great breakfast (even out the highway, past B-ham).

What about Green Acres? My wife mentioned she saw something on this place. I see there are many throughout the city. Which one on the eastern end is the best?

Niki's West - Southern vegetables, served cafeteria style.
Jim 'n' Nick's - barbecue. Or Full Moon.
Down Hwy 280, Lloyd's.

There is a great breakfast place called Joe and Deb's in Eastlake on Oporto-Madrid Blvd and about 3rd or 4th avenue south. The neighborhood is a little sketchy but I think you'll be very happy with the food.
