I`m proud of Huntsville but Mobile`s Metro only consist of one county and Huntsville`s metro has three. The commuting patterns of Baldwin and Washington County has increased so more than likely they will be included in the metro both are already at the 25 % commute mark witch qualifies them as metro counties. And Clarke county is at 13 % and the CSA guiedline is 14 %, again I`m happy to see the progress in Huntsville. The over all feel of Mobile is still feel like a city/area that is larger and more urban.

Continue to move forward Huntsville ! If I had a choice I would pick the other metro cities before Huntsville.I lived in Huntsville for three years the city lacked vibe in my opinion.

Cities 3 hours away from places that leave Atlanta in the dust, like LA, aren't considered the same place. How would that happen to Atlanta?

The vibe is improving in Huntsville but only marginally. Growth continues but it is mostly high income transplants which is not a bad thing IMHO. If I lived in Mobile, I doubt I would want to leave either!

Huntsville is full of guys with pocket protectors, some of whom make pretty good new money. Problem is they don't want to spend it.
Therefore the economic scene as far as retail and entertainment is abysmal. But most metros in the 500,000 range have a time with having enough consumer support.

It will never have substantial old money which is going to hamper it moving forward. It most reminds me of Amarillo, (another flat one highway town) but without the oil. Pitty.

but while we're on the subject, I wonder what the chances are of Tuscaloosa County being added to the Birmingham metro anytime soon? anyone have commuting figures between the two?

Seems liek it will never happen. There is too much job growth in Tuscaloosa, and already many people who reverse commute to Mercedes and suppliers from Jeff Co. Coupled with very little job growth on the western side of town and little population in east Tuscaloosa county and it just makes it very unlikely.

I would see Cullman getting added to the MSA before Tuscaloosa. Per census data only about 1/3 more people commute from Tuscaloosa to Jefferson than vice versa.

AFAIK reverse commutes count too. It probably won't ever be part of the MSA, but I could see it joining the CSA by 2018 or 2020. Any kind of favorable patterns between it and Bibb, Walker or Jefferson is all it would take.

I think they would have to decommission Cullman's micropolitan area before that could happen, so probably unlikely too.
