I recently moved to the B'ham area from the north and I love it, love it, love it. I too have lived in a few parts of the country, and I always try to take the attitude that you referred to when I am on a "new adventure". It's not always easy when you are far from friends and family to keep yourself in the right frame of mind but it's a step in the right direction towards being happy where you are. I think you will find the people, culture etc. here to be quite wonderful. I don't think I'm met an unpleasant person yet! Get used to everyone addressing you as "yes ma'am" or "no ma'am". Nice but different from what you are used to in Chicago I bet. I wasn't used to it, but it makes me smile, especially coming from a little child. Welcome to Alabama!

I don't think that I have met an unpleasant person around Birmingham yet. After 3 trips down there, everyone from the clerk at the convenience store, the servers in the restaurants, and even the young lady that checked in my rental car at the airport have all been nice as could be. Quite a change from what I am used to these days & only one of the many reasons why I have been so impressed with the area.

I am surprised at how many of you have had such a wonderful time in Birmingham. I have been here for 2 years this May and still can't call it "home." It's funny my partner is from Tucson and she is CONSTANTLY complaining about the fact that there isn't a Trader Joe's! There are a lot of things about Birmingham that impress me (considering we are in the deep south) but I feel that Birmingham, along with a lot of other places, has a long way to go. It isn't the place for me (plans to move in October ) but I feel I've given it a decent run. It sounds like a lot of people from bigger cities come here searching for that "something" and they are finding it here, so that surely says something good about this place. I guess "home" really is where the heart is and I just can't give any more of my heart to Birmingham-it has been unkind to it and I have been forced to shut off the arterial supplies! As long as people continue to move into Birmingham I think it will continue to be an interesting and even better place to live. I'll be excited to come visit in 10 years and see how much Birmingham will have blossomed. I will miss Doggie-do-dah day in the park and the "colorful" characters I meet from time to time though!
