Question Moving from michgan to ensley alabama,HELP!!!

hi my name is bria and i need someone to tell me everything about life in alabama before i move there. My family and i are moving with my dad and he is from there and a little bit older so he loves it from an older persons stand point. But i need to know what is there to do for younger adults, especially since im coming from a city that real fast, always on the go and has a tough exterior

Congratulations, you may very well be moving to one of the few places in the country more dangerous than Detroit.

Ensley is not the best part of town, but there are some really nice older historic homes along Bush Blvd. The people in that area generally look outfor each other with a strong neighborhood watch. Other portions of Ensley are very edgy and can be quite dangerous, so it can litterally swing wildly from street to street, block to block.

The rest of Birmingham has things for young people to do wether you are into the college scene, hip hop or country. Its just not going to be as vibrant or large as a bigger Midwestern city has to offer.

I'm from the metro Detroit area. My husband actually worked in the city for the last 12+ years. We relocated to Alabama about two months ago due to his employment.

I don't live in Birmingham, but I watch and read the news enough to have some idea of what goes on down here. Now, I'm not a gambler but I'm willing to bet - based on my observations - that the worst day in the roughest section of Birmingham is infinitely better than a good day anywhere in the D. And I use the term "good" loosely when I speak of Detroit.

If you think I'm exaggerating, I suggest reading multiple news sources from Detroit for just a week. And I assure you, as someone who hasn't been gone long and still has all of my family and friends living in the area and working in the city, only a miniscule amount of what goes on even gets reported. Believe me when I say, virtually all of Detroit is like a third world country war zone.

It's clear Birmingham, Jefferson county, and even Alabama have its issues, but they aren't anywhere near the extreme Detroit, Wayne county, and even Michigan in general are experiencing. This state has a healthy economy and almost no crime at all when comparing the two.

Don't be. Ensley, however, isn't what I'd call a desirable part of town. Lots of great places to live elsewhere in the city.

There's lots of statistics on it. For Birmingham's population, it is very similar to Detroit in terms of crime.

I agree with the Alabama economy being better than Michigan's. And while Alabama as a whole may be safer, Birmingham is not a "safe" place. The statistics speak for themselves.

Birmingham crime rates and statistics - NeighborhoodScout

"With a crime rate of 101 per one thousand residents, Birmingham has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 10. Within Alabama, more than 99% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Birmingham."
