I just bought a new car. First of all, I have heard about nightmarish stories of folks having to wait in line at the courthouse. Any suggestions of times to go? Also, are there any alternatives? Online? Finally, what documents do I need to bring with me to get it transferred to my new car (license, ID, etc.)?

Thanks!!

You can't do the initial title transfer and registration/tag purchase online. You have to do it at the license/tag office. Once the vehicle's in the system, you'll get annual renewal notices and can handle it online or by mail.

For the first visit you'll need:

- The vehicle (they'll check the VIN at the tag office).
- Title or title app (properly executed).
- Bill of sale (properly executed).
- State-issued drivers' license or non-driver's ID for each person on the title, with current address. (If two names on the title with "and", or with no conjunction, both of you have to go to the tag office at the same time with your IDs. No exceptions. If the names are separated by "or", only one of you has to go to the tag office, but with the other person's license number and expiration date.
- Proof of insurance for THIS CAR -- not your other car. This means you need to get something in writing from your agent that you've added this car to the policy.
- If this is the first thing you've done in the state or county, and especially if your drivers' license doesn't have your current address, call the license office to find out what you need to offer as proof of residency in the county. Simply your drivers' license might not do it. You might need a lease, or utility bills, etc.
- checkbook/credit card to pay whatever you need to pay.
- something to read while waiting in line.

As for where to go and the best time to go, it depends on your county. If you're in Jeffco, consider going to Bessemer. If you're in Shelby County, consider going to Columbiana or the small office off 280. Mondays and Fridays are the busiest, and avoid the last few days of the month.

Thanks for the detailed response! Do they actually check my car there at the courthouse?

Yes. I haven't gone to the downtown B'ham courthouse tag office in years, so I don't remember how they handle it with the parking there. But here in Shelby County, they walk out and check the VIN on the car.

There's gonna be a line. And parking is a hassle. Don't say you weren't warned.
