Your welcome. Somehow I forgot the new apts. at Hallman Hill on Oxmoor in Homewood. This is a great walkable neighborhood with lots of cafes, shops, delis, the Donkey, Pinches, and even Loft hotel with great lobby activity.

I agree on the communities on the southern side of in the Birmingham limits. Highlands and Avondale are probably a top choice given what you've said. There are more college students the the 5 points region just south of UAB (what I consider to be Southside in the stricter sense), but I live there are there are also a large number of young professionals in the area. Glen Iris isn't bad too. I suppose downtown Homewood (aka SOHO, which is a ridiculous and pretentious name I refuse to call it) wouldn't be too bad and isn't a pretty short commute, but I just don't see a reason to live there given the above options and not only more fun and everything, but you wouldn't have to deal with 20th St/Richard Arrington. Crestline area has less traffic to UAB, but I just don't know why you'd live on an apartment complex out on Montclair. Getting to Cahaba Heights (far from what I'd consider the center of the city), Bluff Park, Patton Chapel, and other over-the-mountain communities are even farther (with a fair amount of commuting traffic), and the only reason I'd see to look there is too find affordable housing in a decent school district.

anywhere on southside...

look at the areas near highland avenue. also, bristol southside (4th ave s/20th st) and cityville (1st ave s/20th st) are upscale places within your budget that are walking distance to the central business district, the new railroad park district and incredibly short cab rides to 5 points and lakeview.

the soho district of homewood may have something for you as well, though this would probably be on the northern end of your price range.

hoover is a nice suburb and there are things to do, but given what you were seeking, i think the other neighborhoods mentioned would be a better fit.
