Yeah, development of schools... Like giving away millions to the school system. Perhaps you can provide a link to an article that says Huntsville gave away money to corporations.

From the link provided by 'John Williams':

Quote:
A one-year deficit is not a surefire indicator of financial problems for a city, but can be an indicator that further analysis of financial data is merited. That's according to Cate Long, founder of Multiple Markets, a municipal debt service, and a regular contributor for Reuters, NPR and the BBC on municipal debt issues.

"Cities can run a one year deficit and be okay," Long says. "Usually raters and investors want to see that it is a one-time event and based on an extraordinary expense or a one-time short fall in revenues."
Bond ratings -do- seem to exist within the scope of this thread.

Bless your heart...

It is in the caption of the original story when you click the name:

Quote:
Its biggest expenses were line items referred to as "public services" and "urban development" in the annual report, representing more then half...
That made me think of things like Belk at BS and WalMart at Mason.

Quote:
the city spent $163 less per resident then Birmingham, but its revenue from service charges per person was much smaller. Total city revenues from government activities were $360 less then Bham on a per resident basis.
And hey, guess what...im still amused by it - and theres nothing you can do about that, champ.

I can always point and sigh that there are people enjoying others' (perceived or real) misfortune. For you, I might even harrumph.

And I can point to people like you that get bent out of shape over the littlest of things. Its not like I started a thread in the Huntsville section just about that. Birmingham takes a lot of heat by people and undue criticism from all sorts of directions. To be amused that this is one measurable instance where they can be proven wrong is A OK.

You know, I'm not really enjoying this passive-aggressive use of "Bless your heart," as though something was mentally amiss with Tourian.

Thank you for expressing this. I wanted to days ago but I am so tired of the 'flashback' that comes from the forum where only 'some' are entitled to express themselves, or it would seem so.

I agree with the horrible use of bless your heart... Perhaps I'm just realizing how offensive this phrase can be...

The forum won't allow one to write "F#c& you", so bless your heart seems to be most appropriate phrase. The phrase has many uses, from expressing genuine sympathy to barely concealed disdain...

Let's focus people - Tourian has shown himself to be someone who revels in others' misfortunes, because of some inferiority he feels or some slights he thinks his city has suffered (not from me, BTW; I like Bham and appreciate that the well-being of the State's largest city is important).

Better now? Don't like it? Well bless yore heart.

If that's true, I didn't see it coming through in this thread.

Tourian = "Also I was amused to see Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery on the negative side."

When the facts were presented, Tourian deflected and continued to proclaim his amusement - I guess he has a grudge against Mobile for some reason.
