We are traveling from Nashville to New Orleans on a Thursday and will be hitting Birmingham between 6:30 - 7:30. We will coming down I65 and will take I20/I59 to New Orleans. The question is, will I hit traffic there that time of day, and if I do, how do I avoid Birmingham traffic?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You will be right in the middle of morning rush and there is no northern bypass.

Sorry.

If you could go through 30 min earlier (6am) or 1 hour later (8:30am), you would be better off...

Or was that PM? If it is evening then evening rush will be winding down and it won't be so bad. Either way that section of 65 is the widest in town and usually handles the load ok.

You cannot miss the I-65 problem due to rush and constructions on the I-22 interchange. But this problem only last for about four or five miles and then you will head west on I-59/I-20 which will be out bound and not affected by rush. Also the west side is not a major commute like the south and east sides. (you do mean a.m.)

I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how well you will get through.

No avoiding it really, but it's really not that bad by the time you get to that time of night.

I did mean a.m. I should have added that. Thanks.

Not the widest right now because of I-22 construction. (twelve lanes when opened) That would be I-65 from I-459 interchange south into north Shelby/Pelham.

If you like looking at alot of scenery you could take exit 308 which is State hwy 69 that would take you near Smith Lake, through Jasper, then into the Tuscaloosa/Northport area and right to I-20/59.

If that is not a good option for you. I-65 would be the only place you will face the morning rush from near Hayden to downtown. You would be heading in the opposite direction from morning, inbound traffic once you get onto I-20/59.

I just don't it will be that big of a deal, even at 7:00 a.m. Of course, why in God's name are you leaving Nashville at four in the morning?
