Son is going to the University of Alabama. We work from home and can live anywhere. Rent can go up to $2700 a month, but we don't like to choose based on what is the most expensive, we just like the best we can get (that doesn't always mean cost).

We have an 11 year old who likes to run cross country and will be entering middle school.

We also had an option of living out of state in Franklin/ Brentwood, TN outside of Nashville but one thing about Alabama (beside being a beautiful state) is we get instate tuition as well BUT THAT is not the deciding factor.

All the schools are great in the areas I listed (at least that is what I have been told)... so where would you choose?

Thanks for your input and Roll Tide!

1. MB
2. Oak Mt./Inverness
3. Trussville

...is how I would rank those. MB is going to be expensive. #2 is probably going to offer the best value.

If you're going to be in the Birmingham area and your son is serious about cross country, Mountain Brook is pretty much your best option, far and away, with Vestavia coming in second. Consistently the best track program overall in the metro year in and year out and the best public school system. Vestavia's school system is also excellent.

$2700 a month will get you a fine house, either rented or bought outright in Mountain Brook.

Thank you both for your help. Not being from the area some of the rolling hills as you go outside of town looked appealing, but the truth is Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills are nationally recognized schools.

Hey, you're welcome. Tourian's suggestions would be good as well. I just think the $2700 price point is quite possible in Mountain Brook.

Well I was just ordering the choices that the OP laid out. I agree that MB and Vestavia are head and shoulders above the other two. Neither has school buses if that means anything to you.

Mountain Brook is one of the nicest (and most expensive) communities in the southeast. With that being said, $2700/month will get you a nice home.
