Recommendations for an apartment? (Birmingham, Bessemer: apartments, to rent, safe neighborhood)

I am relocating to Birmingham to work at UAB. I would appreciate any recommendations regarding apartments to rent in a safe neighborhood within a short drive to UAB. Thanks!

Many of the apartments downtown don't have washer and dryer connections in the apartment. There are many specials out there so now is a good time to rent.

I lived in Lakeshore Gardens for 1 year and never had a problem. My apt. was 2 br/2ba with w/d hookups and it was 640 per month! Cable was 20 per mo and utilities ran about 150 per mo.

Thank you for your replies. I prefer a one bedroom with washer & dryer. Price...around $800/month or less. No pets. I would like to be able to walk/run nearby and feel safe.

A one bedroom at Lakeshore Gardens would be cheap, way less than 800.There is a walking / running path that goes from the entrance to the apts. and follows along Lakeshore drive and passes Samford University Homewood H.S. and several other business and through a residential neighborhood.........
